Overview

About Paul Allen

Paul Allen is the radio play-by-play announcer for the Minnesota Vikings, calling games on flagship station KFAN 100.3 FM in the Twin Cities. He was named to the role in 2002, after auditioning unsuccessfully for it the year before, and enters his 25th season as the voice of the Vikings in 2026.

Before he ever called an NFL game, Allen worked as a sportswriter for the Pasadena Star-News and USA Today, and as a horse-race announcer, including calling races at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota, starting in 1995. He joined KFXN-FM (KFAN) in 1998.

His broadcasting style is genuinely emotional rather than neutral. That has made individual calls of his, both agonised and joyful, into some of the most replayed pieces of Vikings radio history, several of which are described with sources in the Memorable Calls section below.

Blair Walsh's missed field goal

A 27-yard field goal in the final minute against Seattle would have won the game for Minnesota. Walsh missed it wide left, and Allen's call, alongside color analyst Pete Bercich, captured the stunned reaction across the Twin Cities in contrast to jubilation on Seattle's broadcast of the same kick.

"Snap good, spot down, Walsh's kick is up and it is… no good, he missed it! Are you kidding me? The season can't end like that! He missed it left!"
