How the Rookie Class Is Contributing

Eleven games in, this class is contributing the way a contending roster usually asks a class to contribute: quietly, in defined roles, without being asked to carry anything. Minnesota is 8-3 because of veterans — Sam Darnold's steadiness, Aaron Jones on early downs, Justin Jefferson bending coverages — and the rookies have slotted in around them rather than in front of them.

Dallas Turner is the clearest on-field return. He is not displacing Jonathan Greenard, but he is the third rusher in every sub package, and the snap count has climbed most weeks since October. Will Reichard has been the least dramatic and arguably the most valuable: a kicker the staff simply does not think about, which is the whole point of spending a sixth-rounder on one.

J.J. McCarthy is the long game. With Darnold playing the best football of his career, there is no reason to rush the quarterback the front office traded up for; the redshirt year is the plan working, not the plan failing. Walter Rouse and Levi Drake Rodriguez round it out as depth — Rouse as the swing tackle, Rodriguez in the interior rotation — and depth on a team three games over .500 in late November is worth more than it looks on a stat sheet.
