Series overview
A long-distance series with one Super Bowl
The Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins play in different conferences, so their schedules cross only occasionally, roughly once every three or four years under the NFL's rotation, plus the rare shared-record pairing. The series dates back to October 1, 1972, and the two teams have met 14 times overall: 13 regular-season games and one Super Bowl.
That Super Bowl meeting is the headline of the series. Miami beat Minnesota 24-7 in Super Bowl VIII on January 13, 1974, at Rice Stadium in Houston, the second of the Dolphins' back-to-back titles and the only time these two franchises have met in the postseason. Outside of that game, the regular-season series has been closer: Miami holds a 7-6 regular-season edge, and the Vikings have won five of the meetings played since 1994, including the last two.
The Vikings host the Dolphins again in Week 4 of the 2026 regular season, on Sunday, October 4, at U.S. Bank Stadium. See the dedicated section below for kickoff time and broadcast details.

How it happened
Minnesota led 10-3 at halftime on a Kirk Cousins touchdown pass to Irv Smith Jr. and a field goal. Miami's Teddy Bridgewater, a former Vikings quarterback, threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to tight end Mike Gesicki to keep the Dolphins within range, and backup Skylar Thompson also saw time after Bridgewater briefly left with a thumb injury. Kirk Cousins added a second touchdown pass to Adam Thielen, and Dalvin Cook's 53-yard fourth-quarter touchdown run put the game away. Tyreek Hill led all receivers with 177 yards for Miami, but the Dolphins never got closer than the final eight-point margin.

Highlighted row: the two franchises' only postseason meeting, Super Bowl VIII, played at a neutral site. All other games listed were regular-season contests.
Notable meetings
Super Bowl VIII (Jan 13, 1974): The only Super Bowl between these franchises came during Miami's perfect-season-era dynasty. Larry Csonka was named MVP after rushing 33 times for 145 yards and 2 touchdowns, and the Dolphins built a 17-0 halftime lead before winning 24-7. Fran Tarkenton threw for 182 yards for Minnesota in the loss, the second of the Vikings' four Super Bowl defeats in that decade.
September 25, 1994, Metrodome shootout: Warren Moon and the Vikings outlasted Dan Marino and the Dolphins 38-35 in a back-and-forth Metrodome shootout, the highest-scoring meeting in series history.
October 1, 1972, Miami's closest call: During Miami's undefeated 1972 season, the Vikings trailed but led 14-6 in the fourth quarter at Metropolitan Stadium before a Garo Yepremian field goal and a late Bob Griese touchdown pass to Jim Mandich gave the Dolphins a 16-14 win — considered the closest the "perfect season" Dolphins came to a loss all year.
