Vikings vs Chiefs
Two teams. A bigger story. Kansas City leads the all-time series 7-2, a margin built mostly on a 23-7 win in Super Bowl IV back in January 1970. The two franchises have met only eight times since in the regular season, most recently a 27-20 Chiefs win in Minneapolis in October 2023. Here is the complete head-to-head record, the last meeting's box score, and every game that shaped this series.

Series overview
A short series with one enormous game
The Minnesota Vikings and Kansas City Chiefs do not share a division and have only played nine times since the two leagues were rivals in the AFL-NFL era. The very first meeting was the biggest possible stage: Super Bowl IV, played January 11, 1970, at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans. Kansas City won 23-7, a result that still anchors the all-time record in the Chiefs' favor more than half a century later.
Away from that game, the series has been a true toss-up on the field but lopsided on the scoreboard: Kansas City has won 6 of the 8 regular-season meetings, with Minnesota's two wins coming in blowouts of their own, 45-20 in 2003 and 16-10 in 2015. The teams have met roughly once every three or four years since 1996, most recently in October 2023.
Kansas City is not on Minnesota's confirmed 2026 regular-season schedule. Based on the recent four-year meeting cycle (2015, 2019, 2023), the next matchup would likely fall in 2027, but no future date has been officially announced. This page is a historical and statistical reference, not a preview of an upcoming game.

Where the rivalry started
Notable meetings between the two teams
Only nine games, but the first one was for a championship. Four meetings stand out for what was on the line or how they were won.
Jan 11, 1970Super Bowl IV · Tulane Stadium, New Orleans
Chiefs 23, Vikings 7
The only Super Bowl meeting between these franchises, and Minnesota's second Super Bowl loss in three seasons. Kansas City, a 13.5-point underdog representing the old AFL, dominated on the ground and forced three interceptions. Chiefs quarterback Len Dawson completed 12 of 17 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown and won Super Bowl MVP; Mike Garrett scored on a trap-play run and Otis Taylor added a 46-yard touchdown catch that put the game away. The result squared the all-time Super Bowl record between the two leagues at 2-2 heading into the AFL-NFL merger.
Dec 12, 1999Regular season · Arrowhead Stadium
Chiefs 31, Vikings 28
The closest and most dramatic regular-season meeting in the series. Minnesota twice rallied from behind, but Kansas City won it with a field goal as time expired, with just 3 seconds left on the clock.
Dec 20, 2003Regular season · Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome
Vikings 45, Chiefs 20

Oct 8, 2023Regular season · U.S. Bank Stadium
Chiefs 27, Vikings 20

A note on this page
What this page leaves out, and why
This page does not include a Next Meeting card. Kansas City is not on Minnesota's confirmed 2026 regular-season schedule, so there is no upcoming date, kickoff time or venue to report. Based on the four-year gap between the 2015, 2019 and 2023 meetings, a 2027 game is plausible, but nothing has been officially scheduled and we are not guessing at a date.
It also does not include a current-season team statistics comparison (points per game, total yards, turnovers) or a current-roster passing, rushing and receiving stat comparison. Minnesota opened the 2026 season with a 39-22 home win over Green Bay on September 13, but a single week of games is not a meaningful season sample, and current-season team comparisons will be more useful as the season progresses (see the Week 1 recap and box score). The Team Comparison and Player Stats sections above use the last completed meeting's real box score instead of estimating or reusing unrelated numbers.
For the same reason, there is no game-week timeline tied to an upcoming matchup. The notable meetings and full match history above instead cover the two teams' actual, documented games.
