From a Minnesota native to a franchise fan favorite: Adam Thielen went undrafted out of a Division II school an hour from his own front door, spent a year on the practice squad, and turned himself into one of the most productive receivers in Minnesota Vikings history.
He retired in January 2026 after 13 NFL seasons, nine of them in purple.
Thielen grew up in Detroit Lakes, a lake town in the northwestern part of the state, and played four sports at Detroit Lakes High School before walking on at Minnesota State University, Mankato, a Division II programme less than two hours from home. Over four seasons there he caught 198 passes for 2,802 yards and 20 touchdowns, earning first-team All-NSIC honours as a senior in 2012.
No NFL team drafted him in 2013. He put a dental-school internship on hold to attend the Vikings' rookie minicamp as a tryout invitee, signed as an undrafted free agent that May, was waived at final cuts, and spent all 16 weeks of his rookie year on Minnesota's practice squad. He made the 53-man roster in 2014 and never left it again until his release nine years later, becoming the local kid who out-worked his way from a small-college tryout into a two-time Pro Bowl caught for the team he grew up watching.
Figures cover Thielen's original run with the Minnesota Vikings, 2014 through 2022 (101 starts in 135 games). He also played briefly for Minnesota again in 2025 after a trade from Carolina, recording 8 catches for 69 yards in 11 games before his release that December. Across his full 13-season NFL career, including four seasons with the Carolina Panthers and a final month with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Thielen finished with 704 receptions, 8,497 receiving yards and 64 touchdowns.
Thielen went undrafted out of Minnesota State Mankato in 2013 and signed with the Vikings that May. He was waived at final cuts and spent his entire rookie season on the practice squad. He made the 53-man roster in 2014, mostly as a special-teams contributor, and caught his first NFL touchdown on , a 44-yard pass from Teddy Bridgewater that proved to be the winning score in a 13–9 win over the Chicago Bears. By 2016 he had become a full-time contributor, catching 69 passes for 967 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Thielen's emergence became impossible to ignore in an game at Lambeau Field, where he caught 202 receiving yards and two touchdowns in a loss to the Green Bay Packers. In 2017 he broke through fully: 91 receptions for 1,276 yards and 4 touchdowns, his first 1,000-yard season and his first Pro Bowl selection.
Thielen opened the 2018 season by recording 100 or more receiving yards in each of his first eight games, an NFL record for the start of a season that tied Calvin Johnson's mark for most consecutive 100-yard games. He finished 2018 with career highs of 113 receptions and 1,373 yards, earning a second straight Pro Bowl nod and second-team All-Pro honours. In 2020 he posted a career-best 14 receiving touchdowns.
Thielen remained a starter through the 2021 and 2022 seasons before Minnesota released him in March 2023. He spent four seasons with the Carolina Panthers, including a 1,000-yard year in 2023, before Carolina traded him back to the Vikings at the start of the 2025 season. His second stint in Minnesota was brief and limited by role, and the team granted his request for release that December so he could finish his career elsewhere. He signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, played his final NFL game in a Monday-night loss to the Houston Texans, and announced his retirement on , closing out 13 NFL seasons.
Thielen's first career NFL touchdown: a 44-yard catch from rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater in the third quarter that stood as the winning score in Week 17.
A career day at Lambeau Field: 202 receiving yards and two touchdowns, the performance that announced Thielen as a legitimate every-week threat.
The season opener that started it all: six catches for 102 yards, the first of eight straight 100-yard games to begin 2018, an NFL record for the start of a season.
91 receptions for 1,276 yards and 4 touchdowns earned Thielen his first Pro Bowl selection, the season that turned an undrafted special-teamer into one of the league's most productive receivers.
